THIS IS IT: SPAR/TAN. PIN GLADIATORS. ONE NIGHT FOR EVERYTHING.
I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE HERE.
Twelve weeks, people. TWELVE WEEKS. Twelve weeks of strikes, splits, questionable handicap conversations, sandbagging allegations, trash talk, miraculous comebacks, and grown adults allowing bowling to consume an absolutely unreasonable portion of their lives.
And now there are only two teams left.
Spar/tan vs. Pin Gladiators.
The BSL Championship is TONIGHT.
And ladies and gentlemen, you could not have scripted this matchup any better.
All season long, people have joked that these two teams were basically the same damn team. Spartans? Gladiators? Both teams looks like they walked out of 300. COME ON, PEOPLE! We couldn't come up with two historical civilizations that were a little farther apart?!
But apparently the similarities didn't stop with the costumes.
Both teams feature some of the burliest bowlers in the BSL history. I'm talking about individuals who look like they should be bench-pressing the ball instead of rolling it.
Both teams are home to one of the two greatest Tonys in the entire league. I'll leave it to the BSL historians, statisticians, and extremely unbiased Tonys themselves to debate which one is No. 1.
And after nine weeks of regular-season bowling?
Spar/tan finished No. 1 in total pins scored.
Pin Gladiators finished No. 2.
Oh, and one more similarity that simply cannot be ignored:
There are a WHOLE BUNCH OF ASIANS on these teams.
BUT THAT'S WHERE THE SIMILARITIES END.
Because the paths these teams took to get here could not have been more different.
Let's go back to Week 6, the first time these two teams met on the lanes.
Spar/tan didn't just beat the Pin Gladiators.
THEY SWEPT THEM.
Since Week 6, Spar/tan has been an absolute MACHINE. They walked out of that matchup and apparently decided losing was no longer something they were interested in participating in.
The Pin Gladiators?
Their Week 6 story went in the complete opposite direction.
That sweep sent the Gladiators crashing all the way down to the BOTTOM OF THE RANKINGS.
THE BOTTOM!
This was a team that started the season at the top, and suddenly they were staring up at practically the entire league.
But here's what I have to give the Gladiators credit for:
They did not die.
They scratched. They clawed. They fought their way back into playoff contention one week at a time. Every week became survival. Every game mattered. Every pin mattered.
And eventually, after fighting their way out of the basement, they did it.
They made the playoffs.
And just when you thought this team had finally caught a break...
THEY LOST THEIR STAR PLAYER.
You have GOT to be kidding me.
For most teams, that's it.
You fought your way back. You survived the regular season. But you lose one of your best bowlers right before the postseason? Start making offseason plans.
But instead of folding, THEY KEPT GOING.
They entered the postseason shorthanded. They had every excuse in the world to say, "We gave it everything we had."
They didn't use a single one.
They survived.
They advanced.
And now somehow, some way, THE PIN GLADIATORS ARE BOWLING FOR A BSL CHAMPIONSHIP.
AND NOW... WE SETTLE IT.
Spar/tan enters tonight as the hottest team in the BSL.
The Pin Gladiators enter as the team that simply refused to go away.
And here's what makes this even better.
Throughout the season, both of these teams have generally enjoyed the luxury of having a pretty healthy handicap cushion against their opponents.
NOT TONIGHT.
Because when these two teams line up across from one another, that advantage nearly disappears.
Spar/tan will receive just 29 pins against the Gladiators.
Twenty-nine.
That's NOTHING.
That's one missed spare. One ugly split. One bowler getting a little too excited after a turkey and launching the next ball directly into the seven pin.
After twelve weeks, this championship could come down to one frame. One shot. One pin.
Spar/tan has already proven they can beat the Gladiators.
The Gladiators have spent the second half of this season proving that the team Spar/tan swept in Week 6 isn't the same team standing in front of them tonight.
So now the questions are simple.
Can Spar/tan finish one of the most dominant stretches we've seen and complete the run?
Can the Gladiators finish one of the most improbable comeback stories of the season?
And most importantly...
WHO IS WALKING OUT OF THAT BOWLING ALLEY AS A CHAMPION?
Twelve weeks brought us here.
Two teams remain.
Spar/tan. Pin Gladiators.
Spartans versus Romans.
No more standings. No more playoff scenarios. No more looking ahead to next week.
There is no next week.
I can't wait to see all of you tonight.
LET'S CROWN A BSL CHAMPION.
